The Survivor premiere on Wednesday left many fans unimpressed with the show’s selection of pathetic contestants.
Not every contestant on Survivor is going to be an All-Star. Some players are just not as cut out for island life as they had envisioned. For fans, it’s not always about who’s the best. Survivor is about taking normal everyday people and pushing them to their limit. Fans simply want contestants who are willing to push themselves in uncomfortable scenarios in order to find out what they are really made of. Unfortunately, for a handful of Season 45’s pathetic contestants, a light push was way more than they could handle.
Survivor usually chooses not to throw contestants directly into the fire to start a season. The show often lets the cast warm up before really ramping up the challenges. For Brandon Donlon, the very first challenge proved to be an overwhelming inferno for him. Brandon suffered a panic attack during the challenge and could not climb up a ladder. For Hannah Rose, the idea of the game itself was too much for her to handle. Hannah essentially urged her team to vote her out, which they ultimately accepted. But according to host Jeff Probst, her early exit should still be considered a quit.
Jeff Probst’s Frustration With Season 45 Contestant Selection
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Probst did not hold back in airing out his frustrations. When asked his thoughts on Hannah’s threats to quit, he said her motivations were plain as day. “Oh, that’s a quit. Yeah, 100 percent. That is a very clear quit. I think what Hannah was doing was giving her tribe a fair warning that if you do not vote me out or agree to let me go home right now, then this tribe of six will quickly be down to four because I’m not staying. That’s what I read,” he said.

Probst has been around the game long enough to identify patterns in the game. He noted the difficult position that Hannah put her team in. “And as difficult as it is, especially if you were in an alliance with Hannah, when someone is that dead set on quitting, I think the smart move is to let them quit and then adapt your game. Because it was very clear to me this was not a typical, ‘Oh, bamboo’s really rough to sleep on.’ This was, ‘Yep, I made a bad decision and I’m going to course-correct right now and go home.’”
For Probst, Hannah wasn’t the only one responsible for the mishap though. He admits that the Survivor production team should shoulder partial blame. “…The first call I made was to Jesse Tanenbaum [Survivor casting director] and Dr. Liza, our head psychologist, to say, ‘Add this into our data, because we got it wrong. We missed something with Hannah. She shouldn’t have been on the show.’”

Fans React To Survivor Contestant Quitting
Jeff Probst wasn’t the only one to notice the diminished quality of this season’s pathetic contestants. Many Survivor fans took to social media to voice their displeasure. The focus of fans’ frustrations were rightfully centered on Hannah and Brandon.
One fan questions why Hannah would even sign up for the show to begin with. “Shocking that the girl went through all the stuff to get on Survivor in the first place..not realizing she would get sweaty, bug bit, muddy, hungry, and tired?? Shame on her for applying,” the fan wrote.
Another fan likened Hannah quitting the show to another instance of failed casting. “I was pretty annoyed that the season started with Hannah just quitting. That reminded me of Survivor: Nicaragua when Kelly B and NaOnka quit. I bet Jeff was annoyed too, just he didn’t show it.”
A third fan went all in with their frustration over Hannah and Brandon. They echoed Probst’s comments regarding the casting team’s lack of foresight. “The Survivor casting team couldn’t have done a better job at finding the most insufferable people for the yellow tribe. Like, I actually feel bad for Caleb and Saiyah. Brandon and Hannah wasted 2 spots. Emily, is just terrible.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hannah remained defiant and stood by her choice to leave the show.
