First Ladies of Hip Hop, Saturday, 21.35, BBC2

Although we always say the first record we ever bought was It’s Late by Shaky, our parents actually paid for it, and we’ve got the feeling the first record we bought with our own money was Born This Way by the Cookie Crew, which is probably a slightly cooler option, although we only opted for it cos we liked the twiddly backing track. This should be an interesting series, not least because it ventures very far out from the Bronx and promises to spend just as much time celebrating the British pioneers like Neneh Cherry who narrates, the Wee Papa Girl Rappers, our old friends the Cookie Crew, Monie Love and, great news for Twitter dads, Betty Boo. The US stars feature as well and during the first two of three episodes, with the third next week, we get to hear all about the eighties and early nineties, including from the survivors of the Great Roxanne Wars.
