Per TMZ, Dick Butkus was found unresponsive in his home on Thursday when someone came over to check on him. Paramedics arrived in response to someone suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu just before 1 P.M. today. Sadly, he was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived.
Dick Butkus’ family released a statement confirming the former Chicago Bears linebacker passed away. The NFL legend’s family confirmed Richard Marvin Butkus died peacefully in his sleep. In the statement, the family noted they were gathering around Dick’s wife Helen to give her the love and support she needs during this difficult time. Moreover, the family noted they appreciated thoughts and prayers rolling in from Chicago Bears fans and NFL fans.

Dick was the ultimate Bear, and one of the greatest players in NFL history. He was Chicago’s son. He exuded what our great city is about and, not coincidently, what George Halas looked for in a player: toughness, smarts, instincts, passion and leadership.
